When Should Businesses Grit Car Parks?

Knowing when to grit a car park isn’t simply a case of looking at the air temperature.

For businesses, the important figure is the road surface temperature. This is the temperature of the actual surface where ice could form and it can be very different from the temperature shown on a standard weather forecast.

At Bawcro, we use specialist weather forecasting and road surface temperature data to help determine when commercial sites across West Yorkshire need treating.

What Temperature Should a Car Park Be Gritted?

Gritting should normally take place before the road surface temperature falls to freezing and before ice has had the chance to form.

Waiting until a car park already looks icy can be too late.

The aim of proactive gritting is to have salt on the surface before freezing conditions develop.

Why Air Temperature Can Be Misleading

A weather app might show an air temperature of 2°C or 3°C but that doesn’t necessarily mean a car park won’t freeze.

Different surfaces lose heat at different rates and exposed areas can become colder than the surrounding air.

Shaded areas, bridges, ramps and exposed car parks can also freeze earlier than expected.

This is why professional winter maintenance shouldn’t rely on a standard weather app alone.

What Time Should Car Parks Be Gritted?

There isn’t one set time that works for every night.

Treatment should be based on the forecast conditions and when the road surface is expected to reach freezing point.

On some nights that could mean treating a site during the evening. On others it may require treatment later overnight or during the early hours.

The important thing is that the treatment is carried out at the right time for the forecast.

Which Parts of a Commercial Car Park Need Attention?

It’s not just the parking spaces.

Particular attention may be needed around:

• Entrances and exits
• Pedestrian walkways
• Loading areas
• Ramps and slopes
• Delivery routes
• Building entrances
• Areas that remain shaded
• Access routes used early in the morning

Bawcro’s commercial car park gritting service can cover priority areas around the whole site.

Should Businesses Grit Every Night in Winter?

No.

Gritting when there is no risk of freezing conditions can waste salt, time and money.

A properly managed winter maintenance service uses forecast information to determine when treatment is actually required.

This allows sites to be treated proactively without unnecessary visits.

What Happens During Snow?

Gritting and snow clearance are different parts of winter maintenance.

During heavier snowfall, simply spreading more salt may not be enough. Mechanical snow clearance may be required to clear access routes and car parks before further treatment takes place.

Bawcro provides commercial snow clearance alongside gritting services.
